At Whaplode Church of England Primary School, our children have access to a rich and creative curriculum which prepares them for the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century and raises aspirations.
Our curriculum content has been carefully chosen, with care and thought, to enable children to build on their prior understanding and provide them with a depth and wealth of knowledge and skills in order to succeed.
To support our curriculum provision, we have chosen to adopt the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum. One of our primary reasons behind this decision is due to the fact that it emphasises the importance of developing the depth of children’s learning. In essence, this means providing children with increased cognitive challenge, allowing them to apply the skills which they have learnt independently in a range of contexts rather than moving them onto the next skill needlessly, when they have not truly mastered it. The essential learning objectives are repeated at our school in a number of meaningful and exciting ways at a level of appropriate challenge for each child so that they are learned deeply.
Our topics are frequently revised, with our children’s interests and needs at the heart of the design. In a boy heavy environment, we ensure our themes are engaging, stimulating and challenging for all pupils. When identifying and refining topics, staff from across both schools work collaboratively to design units of work which provide interconnected links between the knowledge formed, and we aim to develop transferable skills. For example, LKS2 have the topic of chocolate. Learning established within this topic is then built on during the UKS2 Maya topic. A further example of this progression of knowledge is LKS2 have the topic of the Anglo-Saxons whilst UKS2 build on this foundation with the Vikings.
We are a school that prides itself on our Christian values, and we aim to ensure all of our pupils feel happy, secure and valued, enabling them to make a worthwhile contribution as young people within our diverse world. Through the education we provide, our children acquire the attitudes and dispositions needed to become well rounded individuals, and we instill a love for learning, enabling them to become life-long learners.
As part of our curriculum design, first hand experiences are essential; trips out of school are vital to our children’s understanding of the world. Each class has a trip, local visit, visitor or special experience in school during each half term to kick-start their new topic. We understand the value of these experiences to maximise learning opportunities and begin lines of enquiry as a result of these encounters.
At this school, we place a high priority on ensuring that both children’s physical and mental wellbeing are met. These areas are as valued and important as academic development as we understand that children will not be successful learners unless they are emotionally secure. This is supported through our detailed PSHE curriculum (Jigsaw), ELSA as well as our Forest School. Forest school provides the opportunity to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners who are able to challenge themselves and take appropriate risks. They are able to, amongst many other activities, build shelters, cook on a camp fire and play team-building games. We believe that learning outside the classroom is essential for our children's mental health and well-being, to understand their part in environmental studies and to have fun bonding with staff and peers.
As part of our understanding on the importance of developing children physically, in our curriculum, every child has the chance to learn to swim at our school’s very own swimming pool. We aim to help make sure all children can swim confidently and know how to stay safe in and around water. The pool is used during the autumn and summer terms where all year groups will swim at least once a week.
Another important aspect of our curriculum design is our commitment to using the latest technology in the school. We aim to provide every child with a personalised iPad, which offers applications tailored to their needs. We believe they are a very valuable educational tool, and they are used in various curriculum areas for support and to accelerate learning.

At Whaplode C of E Primary school it is our underlying belief that every child should feel valued and experience the feeling of success in a wide range of curriculum areas. We believe that through the curriculum we can impact on what is in children’s heads and how they feel about themselves, so that they feel confident and ready to tackle any challenges they may face.
We have designed, organised and planned our curriculum to ensure every child receives an appropriate mix of academic and personal development which means that in practice our curriculum places equal importance on core and foundation subjects which are mostly delivered through our Connections curriculum. When planning for our Connections curriculum, staff from across both schools work collaboratively to design units of work which will meet the needs of all learners.
Our balanced approach to the curriculum is not at the expense of high standards in core subject areas. High standards and enabling children to reach national expectations and above is of vital importance if they are to succeed at the next stage of their education and go on to achieve full and happy lives and careers.

We design, organise and plan our curriculum to ensure that children are not merely covering content but achieving a depth to their learning which enables them to use their skills and understanding in all areas of the curriculum.
Our careful curriculum design and planning means that we build in many opportunities for repetition and practise opportunities for essential knowledge, skills and understanding in every subject. This ensures that children are able to revisit previous learning, which allows them to gradually develop a deeper understanding of the skills and processes within subjects, at their own pace and in the best possible way for each individual child.
Our curriculum is meticulously designed and planned to move the nature of children’s thinking to a higher order deep level of understanding rather than just acquiring new facts and knowledge.

In accordance with the 1998 Education Reform Act, parents have the right to withdraw their children from RE lessons and daily acts of worship. Any requests should be made in writing to the Head Teacher.
Overview of planned units
Children will experience a broad range of activities in their PE lessons. This will include dance and gymnastic activities, athletics, swimming and games. Children have opportunities to improve upon their individual performances, and to compete in teams and as individuals. They are encouraged to overcome challenges. The school aims to promote the enjoyment of PE for all children whatever their level of ability.
We have employed two sports coaches from Sports2day to work with children from KS1 upwards and staff on a weekly basis. They are supporting either in lessons or extra after school and lunch time sports clubs. PE funding has also allowed the school to employ a swimming teacher for the summer Term.
Y5/6 children take part in Friday Afternoon Sports Academy. They are split by sporting ability into groups on a Friday afternoon and take part in sports sessions, health and well being/healthy lifestyle and work with the sports coaches from Sports2day. They may also take part in taster sessions of different sports. e.g. kick boxing.
At Whaplode, children will perform, listen to, review and evaluate music. Children will have the opportunity to play musical instruments and par take in choir singing to perform after a period of time.
In Key Stage 1 children will play tuned and untuned instruments and experiment by combining different music together.
In Key Stage 2 children will improvise and compose music for a purpose. Children will also learn about staves and begin to use music. Children will also have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the history of music.
At Whaplode, design and technology is taught throughout the topic based curriculum. DT encourages the use of creative and practical activities with the opportunity to evaluate their designs and the processes used to complete them. Children are taught to plan, construct and develop ideas through communicating their ideas. They work with tools, equipment and materials to make new products.
In Key Stage 1 children will design products that they can use for themselves and others as well as communicating their ideas with those around them. Children will evaluate their constructions, thinking about how they can be improved by making it more stable or stronger for example.
In Key Stage 2 children will develop their skills from key stage 1 to research and develop functional constructions for a specific purpose.
Children will also have the opportunity to learn cookery, by following basic instructions and understand about nutrition with healthy eating.
Computing studies prepare children to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are being increasingly transformed by access to varied and developing technology.
Computing covers a broad range of software and hardware platforms. Children are taught to use devices, such as iPads to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information. With the advent of the new curriculum there is now much more of a focus on content creation and children are taught to think both logically and creatively to use different applications and software packages to achieve outcomes.
Computing also covers the creation of digital content such as mobile applications and throughout the school children are taught how to write, debug and apply basic computer code.
The school is equipped with multi-functional touch-screen LCD displays, a range of iPad handheld devices and super-fast fibre optic broadband. With reference to the internet and email use, parents are asked to give permission before children use this technology.
As an Apple RTC (Regional Training Centre) we pride ourselves on the rich and varied curriculum that the children have. This means that computing is not taught in discrete sessions but is instead disseminated throughout the curriculum.
During the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, our children will ask geographical questions about people, places and types of environment in our local area and beyond. Our Key Stage 2 children will use and develop their geographical enquiry skills. They will study a variety of local, distant, similar and contrasting environments. They will learn how these can be changed by physical and human processes.
In history, children learn about and people and events from the past. History will be delivered in our school through stories, investigation of artefacts and the use of other resources including books, photographs, computers, visitors into school and outside visits. In the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, the children will learn about changes in their own lives, and their family or others around them. They will find out how the past is different from the present and about significant people and events. In Key Stage 2, the children will study history from social, cultural and economic perspectives. They will acquire problem solving and practical skills while learning that evidence from the past can be interpreted in a number of ways.
Science teaching follows the National Curriculum guidelines through a topic approach, providing a broad, relevant Science curriculum for all the children. We teach a balance between knowledge and investigation skills, which we aim to develop through hands on experiences. Pupils are encouraged to solve problems by making close observations, planning, predicting, fair testing and recording their findings in a systematic way. We embrace opportunities to link Science with Maths and Literacy wherever possible, such as the collection of data in charts and tables and the presentation of knowledge in the form of information texts. A further focus of the subject is developing responsible attitudes towards the environment and all living things within our school.
Pupils begin learning French at the start of Year 3 and continue to do so throughout their time in Key Stage 2. Lessons aim to develop pupils’ skills in listening to and understanding French, as well as speaking, reading and writing in the language. We also endeavour to provide pupils with additional opportunities to apply their conversational skills though links with French-speaking members of our local community
At Whaplode Church of England Primary School we use English to communicate in both written and spoken form. We believe that developing a love of language in our children is vital in achieving success at school and in later life. English is taught daily across the whole school with work appropriately differentiated to match all abilities.
The English curriculum is broken down in to the following three areas:
Talking is fundamental to learning. Pupils are encouraged to speak clearly, confidently and with expression in order to state their ideas and opinions. Just as important is the need to listen carefully to others and respond in appropriate ways. Pupils in our school are given opportunities in all areas of the curriculum to develop their speaking and listening skills in paired, group or whole class situations.
Children who read for pleasure gain a richer vocabulary, more knowledge, critical thinking skills and become independent learners. Guided reading is an important part of our curriculum. Children work in focused groups to develop their reading skills and understanding of texts. We provide children with rich reading experiences within English lessons and encourage them to appreciate the author’s use of language and writing techniques in order to develop their own writing skills.
Our children take their reading books home daily to share with families and carers. As they go through school, they are given more responsibility for making their own reading choices from the resources we have in school.
At Whaplode Church of England Primary School we aim for children to be independent writers. We encourage them to write clearly and with confidence in any given genre. We teach them to use punctuation and grammar accurately, to be able to proofread their own work and make amendments and improvements. We give children a wide range of opportunities in which to develop their writing skills and display work of which they are proud.
Pupils in Reception, Year1 and Year 2, are taught phonics using the Read Write Inc scheme. We also use this scheme to provide support for some of our older learners who may not yet be secure with their phonic development.
Through our English curriculum, we aim to nurture in the children a love of literature and language, and the confidence to continue reading and writing throughout their lives.
The aims of the 2014 Maths Primary Curriculum ensure that all pupils;
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalising and developing an argument, justification or proof using Mathematical language.
- Can solve problems by applying their Mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
To achieve these aims, we follow a practical, investigative scheme of work which gives pupils the opportunity both to learn new skills and concepts and to apply these in problem solving situations. Lessons are planned to allow children to acquire new concepts and to consolidate these through practical investigative Mathematical activities that lead to real learning. We also use ‘Operation Friday’ sessions to develop children’s resilience to problem solving and provide opportunities for the children to apply previous learning.
Teachers and teaching assistants facilitate the children’s learning by supporting and extending their thinking through appropriate questioning.
Children learn to record their work in a way that is clear and appropriate to them. They are taught formal written calculation methods which are in line with the requirements of the new Primary Curriculum. (See revised Calculation Policy)
Alongside this, children learn and practise ‘basic skills’ in Mathematics such as times tables and number bonds.
The new Primary Curriculum will be delivered following a whole school long and medium term plan, ensuring coverage of the objectives from each strand and providing opportunities to revisit and build upon previous learning. There is not an expectation that children will be taught from the curriculum of the following year group however teachers use these documents to provide support and challenge for all pupils. Provision is made, through challenging problem solving activities, for those children who learn new concepts quickly.
